Where does the loafer come from?

London shoemaker Raymond Lewis Wildsmith was asked to design a slipper for King George VI. This shoe was subsequently brought to market and sold in shoe stores. Following this, many different variations of this loafer were designed worldwide.

In 1953, Gucci developed its own loafer with finer shapes and a gold strap over the instep. This Gucci variant transformed the simple slipper into a more formal shoe. Today, there are countless types and variations – for both women and men. From the simple, casual slip-on with a chunky sole to the elegant loafer with a narrow last and a gold or silver strap or chain over the instep.

How do you style loafers?
