Where does the loafer come from?

London shoemaker Raymond Lewis Wildsmith was asked to design a house shoe for King George VI. The shoe was then brought to market and sold in shoe stores. Afterwards, many different variations of this loafer were designed worldwide.

In 1953, Gucci developed its own loafer with more refined shapes and a golden strap on the vamp. Gucci’s version elevated the simple house shoe into a more formal shoe. Today, there are many different types and variations – for both women and men. From simple, casual slip-ons with chunky soles to elegant slip-ons with a narrow last and a gold or silver strap or chain on the vamp.
